Dr Anthony Buckley

PhD MSc BSc

Faculty of Medicine and Health, School of Medicine, University of Leeds.

Tony completed his Ph.D. in 2007 investigating the molecular mechanisms of efflux pump-mediated antibiotics resistance in Salmonella Typhimurium at the University of Birmingham. During his years as a post-doctoral researcher, he never strayed from microbiology, working with gut pathogens, such as Campylobacter and C. difficile, developing vaccines, and the gut microbiota. He started in the department of Food Science & Nutrition in 2021 as a Lecturer in Food Microbiology. Tony has been fortunate enough to collaborate with a wide range of scientists from different disciplines, including engineering and geography, which has developed his research capabilities.

Tony now leads the Microbiome & Nutritional Sciences Group, as Associate Professor in Gut Microbiology. His team uses nutrition to modulate the host microbiome for better health benefits, covering 1) novel prebiotics, 2) the detrimental effects of nutrition, 3) ulcerative colitis, and 4) understanding the gut-brain axis. His group collaborates with nutrition, pharmaceutical and biotherapeutic industries, and academia. On a personal note, he has two wonderful children, who keep him busy, and loves to travel with his partner, Amanda.
